Computer Skills Development -- Minutes -- October 13, 2006

Friday, October 13, 2006
9:30 a.m. to 12 p.m.
Frank D.
Christine P.
George M.
Jack H.
Suzanne A.
Katherine H.
Edan C.
Darryl V.

MediTech Skills Reviewed:
  1. Accessing patient records using Recently Accessed Records, Any Record, Any Location, My List(s), and Personal List.
  2. Adding and removing records from Personal List.
  3. Viewing nursing/clinician notes in scrollable format.
  4. Viewing progress notes/consultation notes in sequential order without using Word Viewer.
  5. Using All Visits to survey all investigations available on MediTech across all times and locations.
  6. Viewing data trends in column form and graph form.
  7. Building a custom My Panel for filtering results of particular interest to you.
Observations And Follow-Up:
Not all psychiatrists are included under our Group. For example, George, Frank, and Anita are not included.
Action = Frank will look into having this last updated and report back.
Suzanne reported that accessing the EMR when she is doing consultations at TBRHSC is problematic. She needs a mobile point of care device to avoid repetitive logging on and off.
Action = Suzanne will look into procuring a loner/purchased notebook/tablet to try out on Wednesdays at least. Report back.
There is no Psychiatric Panel available, although custom panels have been developed for Cardiology, Nephrology, etc.
Action = at the next Department of Psychiatry meeting, survey what items should be included in such a panel. Darryl will then inquire about the possibility of having this implemented in the EMR.
When viewing Other Reports, the default option is "Auto Viewer ON", opening Word Viewer every time a report is opened. This can be disabled for faster viewing, and Word Viewer can be launched as necessary for printing.
Action = Darryl will see if this default option can be changed in this version or future versions.
Computer Skills Videos:
Rather than e-mailing these around, I have copied them to our "G: Drive" on the hospital network. You should be able to find this under My Computer, as a drive labeled "doctors" and identified with the drive letter G:
You can copy them to your computer, or view them over the network. They take about 10-30 seconds to download and start playing.
Next Meeting:
November 24 at 10 a.m.
Topic to be determined.

Journal Alerts from EBSCO

1. In order to set up a EBSCOhost Journal Alert you will need to be logged into your My EBSCOhost Account. If you
don’t have an account see the instructions on how to create one in The Periodical, Volume 1, no. 2 (Winter-Spring)
2006, page 1.
2. Once inside your My EBSCOhost Account, from the main toolbar, select the blue tab Choose Databases.
3. Select one of the five full-text databases that best suits the journal’s subject area that you are interested in setting up
an alert for. The five full-text databases include: i) CINAHL with Full Text, ii) Biomedical Reference Collection,
iii) Nursing & Allied Health Collection, iv) Psychology and Behavioral Sciences Collection and v) Health Business
Full Text.
4. For the purposes of this Tip & Trick we’ll be working in the Nursing & Allied Health Collection database. Scroll down
to this database. Just under the blue hyperlinked name of this database you’ll notice two more blue hyperlinks: Title
List and More Information. Click on the Title List hyperlink.
5. Find the green tab Publications. This is the area of the screen we’ll be working in to set up the journal alert.
6. Now look for the Browse Publications text box; inside this text box type in the name of the journal you are
interested in setting up an alert for. For example: type in the journal title Geriatrics and then click on the grey
Browse button. A list of matching titles will appear.
7. Click on the hyperlinked title, Geriatrics.
8. Look for and select the hyperlink Journal Alert — located in the upper right-hand corner.
9. Enter/fill in the fields. Once you have finished entering all the information click on the grey Save button located at the
bottom of the page. After saving your alert, EBSCOhost will prompt you to confirm your alert — do so by clicking on
the grey OK button.
10. Shortly after confirming your journal alert, EBSCOhost will send you, via email, an EBSCOhost Alert Notification.
11. You have now successfully set a journal alert and an email will be sent to you each time a new issue is made
available on EBSCOhost.

There’s no limit to the number of journal alerts you can set up — the journal titles you select just need to be available in full-text within
one of the five full-text databases outlined above. You can delete or modify your journal alerts by simply logging into your My
EBSCOhost Account and selecting the yellow folder, My Folder has items. Once inside My Folder locate, just over to the far left
hand side of the My Folder screen, a list of bulleted hyperlinked items, i.e. Images, Videos, etc. Select the blue hyperlink Journal
Alerts. From the Journal Alerts screen you’ll be able to edit or remove set alerts from your My EBSCOhost Account.
