Tablet PC Utilities

Electronic Clinical Documentation

See this chart for an overview of different modalities for generating the content of progress notes, and how the content produced finds its way into the EMR:

I have prepared some screencasts demonstrating these different modalities in order to show the actual workflow and time required for each.

Keyboard:

Handwritten:

Dictated:

Each method has its advantages and disadvantages:
  1. immediate versus delayed entry in the EMR
  2. continuous versus interrupted workflow
  3. no learning curve (dictation), small learning curve (handwriting), large learning curve (speech recognition)
  4. total time spent "on task"
  5. the ability to record during the interview versus recording after the interview
I will be posting a summary and comparison chart in the days ahead.
